MIEKA PAULEY / RYAN TENNIS ~ Live at The Grand Hall at Workshop13
Mieka Pauley / Ryan Tennis Live at The Grand Hall ~ Workshop13 w/Special Guest The Rafters Saturday, March 14,2015 Door @ 6:30PM Show @ 7PM $15 Advance $18 Door Award-winning MIEKA PAULEY possesses a voice that flows like good whiskey and a frankness that makes Alanis Morissette look shy. She conjures up a sonic immediacy with the same masterful command as Ani DiFranco with driving, yearning melodies that stand alongside the work of Michelle Shocked, Neko Case and Emmylou Harris. Mieka began as a solo artist in Boston. Her haunting voice and heartbreaking lyrics gained her more than a few fans, securing her bills with Eric Clapton, Jason Mraz, Citizen Cope, Lyle Lovett, Wyclef Jean, Black Eyed Peas, John Hiatt, Edwin McCain, John Legend, KT Tunstall, Natasha Bedingfield, Ben Kweller, Mindy Smith, Mason Jennings, Gavin DeGraw, The Avett Brothers and many others while earning herself slots at must-see music events (Newport Folk Festival, South by Southwest, CMJ and the Rites of Spring in Nashville.) and high-profile gigs like singing the national anthem at Red Sox games. She's also been featured on BBC London Radio, PRI's "Mountain Stage" and the music session blog Daytrotter. Pauley's career pursuits have helped her win prestigious competitions. She won the first ever Starbucks Emerging Artist Award, the New York Songwriters Circle Songwriting Contest, the Rocky Mountain Folk Festival Songwriter Showcase, the Rock Boat/BMI Song Contest and she was named Cosmopolitan Magazine's Fun Fearless Female Rockstar of the Year. She puts her guitar in the trunk of her car and does an average of 150 live shows a year criss-crossing the country. She follows her own vision for her music and her soul / blues / rock / acoustic / alternative style. Mieka describes her music as "mainstream indie rock" and feels the contradiction perfectly describes her obsessions. Not content to wait for label backing, Pauley has self-released all of her work, which includes three other EPs and two full-length albums. For The Science of Making Choices, her new full-length album released in June of 2012, she joined forces with PledgeMusic. Having worked with producer Geoff Stanfield (Firehorse, Sun Kil Moon) to create The Science of Making Choices, Pauley feels she's finally captured in the studio the same rawness she conjures when playing live. "It's finally like me making that alternative sound while still holding on to what makes my live solo show work. He was able to take that live vibe, that connection, and then put really sweet, respectful production behind it. I really love that Geoff was able to make it happen." "My songs are like the actions that I can't really take." So says Mieka Pauley, a refreshingly candid artist whose vagabond background infuses The Science of Making Choices, Frequently moving about the country in her formative years, settling down, then uprooting and starting anew: No wonder her messages have a no-time-for-B.S. vibe. While her lyrics are startling "Never f*ck a woman that you don't love," "I promise this time I won't be a psycho," "I wanna wreck your home/I wanna get your husband alone" they're never vindictive. In fact, her confessions invite listeners to admit they share the same inner struggles and desires. "A lot of it is true from the prospective of me thinking these things. It's all sh*t that I went through in my own head, like rocking in the corner," she says of her songs about retaliation ("First Stone," "Marked Man"), lust and envy ("Wreck"), desperation ("Another Go") and brokenhearted disgrace ("Never F*ck a Woman That You Don't Love"). "But I've never tried to kill a man or steal a husband," she laughs. Northeast Performer calls her "a version of Sarah McLachlan with a switchblade in her shoe," The Boston Globe said she's "like Aretha in the husky vocal turns," and The Cornerstone Player dubbed her "the next meaningful female voice of her generation." Mieka's song "Devil's Got My Secret" can heard in the movie Peace, Love and Misunderstanding, which stars Academy Award winner Jane Fonda, Oscar nominee Catherine Keener and Elizabeth Olsen. visit: mieka.com The charming authenticity of RYAN TENNIS' sound has drawn comparisons to Paul Simon,Bill Withers and Ben Harper--surprising likenesses for an all-American college football player turned singer/songwriter. While his disarming lyrics and singable melodies display a rare sensitivity, the intensity of his live performances hint at his gridiron past. Shows swing as easily from pin-drop-silence-inducing acoustic ballads to deep-grooving funk jams and bumping roots reggae covers. Revealed in the varied whole is an artist devoted to honest songwriting and willing to follow his own expression to a place beyond easy categorization. Tennis' ability to connect with diverse audiences has endeared him to fans at home and abroad, and with a dogged DIY mentality the last two years have seen him orchestrate successful tours through Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, Colombia, and Argentina. The coming year holds a return to Switzerland and Germany, and another tour in South America opening for his Colombian friends and collaborators, El Caribefunk. Stateside, Tennis has an ever-expanding regional tour schedule revolving around his home city of Philadelphia. He has opened for Grammy Winners Kenny Loggins and Shawn Colvin, performed at the Philadelphia Folk Festival and Falcon Ridge's "Emerging Artist Showcase," and shared the stage with folk legends Ellis Paul and Jonatha Brook. He's appeared on NBC'sThe 10! Showand 6abc'sTuned in, and has become a regular on Philadelphia independent radio. In 2010, Tennis emerged atop more than 600 entrants in the Philadelphia Songwriters Project Contest, and was nominated as Philadelphia's singer/songwriter of the year by bothOrigivationMagazine and WSTW'sHometown Heroes. Perhaps his proudest achievement is his "Clubhouse Concerts," a warmly welcoming monthly series at his home in South Philly, which Tennis hosts, curates, and performs at. Touring favorites like Barnaby Bright, Carsie Blanton, the Gold Magnolias, Mieka Pauley and the West Philadelphia Orchestra have graced the stage, and some of Philly's finest players are likely to show up for jam sessions that routinely go until 3 in the morning. "When I first started playing, music was all about discovering a new side of myself," says Tennis. "That's been shifting. As George Clinton of Parliament Funkadelic said awhile back, 'Free your ass, and your mind will follow.' Now I bring that rhythm and emotion out to the audience as well, so it can do for them what it did for me - help them discover." visit: ryantennismusic.com THE RAFTERS are Dave Fitzgibbons and Miki Bryan, a husband and wife duo. Their music focuses on melody and lyrics over a blend of pop/folk influences. Their songs are snap shots into their lives, their loves, and those things which make us all human. They have opened for such National acts as The Laws, Michelle Malone and Lori Mckenna. The Rafters have performed at the Wachusett Valley Folk Festival, Lowell Folk Fesitval, headlined the prestigious Bull Run in Shirley, Massachusetts plus they had the honor of kicking off Boston's Pride 2011. The Rafters shared the mainstage at the both the 2012 Wachusett Valley Folk Festival headlined by Joan Osborne and John Gorka, and the 2013 Wachusett Valley Music Festival headlined by Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls ! In October 2013 they had traveled to CT to open for Mieka Pauley. In 2007, Dave and Miki released their debut CD "The Rafters" working with famed producer Lorne Entress. In August 2009 , their second CD "With the Sun", mastered by Grammy award-winning engineer Mark Donahue was completed. December 2012 marked the release of their 3rd CD "Breathing Room" to a sold-out crowd at a Shirley Town Hall concert. The Rafters are currently moving in a new direction working on their 4th studio album, this time with famed producer Crit Harmon! visit: theraftersband.com/ WORKSHOP13 is a nonprofit organization that supports the development of visual and performing artists and cultivates a community that appreciates art. visit: workshop13.org
